OPVL's on all of the sources I used for this report and throughout
my project. Click on any one to go to its citation.
The origin of this source is FeltMagnet.com. The author is an artist
named Robie Benve. It was published December 1, 2017. The purpose
of this source is to inform other artists of the brushes that should be
used when painting with acrylic paints. It is an opinion on which are
the best brushes to use. The content of this source is that it has
information about what kind of brushes to use for different types
of projects. This source is valuable because it gives the
opinion of an artist on what brushes are good to use. A limitation
is that it is only the opinion of the artist and may or may not be an
accurate representation of good brushes.
This source is a blog post by and artist named Dan Schultz . This
was published on January 26, 2013. The purpose of this source was
to share his personal experience with different types of canvases.
This is a biased opinion because the author is saying his
opinion of which type of canvas is better. This source is valuable
because it is the opinion of an artist who has worked with many
types of canvases. This source has the limitation of being biased
and only shares one opinion.
This book was written by a collection of people including Wayne
Thiebaud For the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum
of Art. It was published 1968 by UCDavis. The purpose was to share
about Wayne Thiebaud and teach about his paintings and the style
he used. It is not biased since it was written by many people who
may have had different views on how to paint impasto style pieces.
This source is valuable because it was written by many people who
knew about art and who wanted to share how to paint well. A
limitation of this book is that It does not share the exact way
to successfully paint a good looking picture.
The book Art for Beginners was written by Dani Cavallaro. It was
published in 2000 by Writers and Readers Publishing Co. This was
written in order to teach the basics of painting to people who are
just learning how to paint sculpt or draw. This source is valuable
because it gives simple examples of how to paint and can show
how to use each tool. A limitation of this source is that the
examples are very simple and do not show how to professionally
use the techniques shown.
The website for International Baccalaureate Organization comes from
the International Baccalaureate Organization. The author is
unknown which makes this source difficult to determine if it is biased.
This source is standardized information so it is very reliable. The purpose
is to inform people who want to learn more about the IB Organization.
The value to this source is that it defines the different criteria and
verbatim of the Personal Project rubric. A limitation for this source is that
It does not show who wrote the different pamphlets or the credentials
of the people who wrote them.

EXCERPT 3
August 16, 2017 I have been researching Wayne Theibaud and his
impasto style paintings.I have been trying out different types of art
styles and different types of materials to see what creates the best
effect for the painting. I have found that oil based paints on canvas
create the desired effect. I am going to the Crocker Art Museum next
week in order to geta closer look at some of the paintings that reflect
this style. After I visit the museum I plan on beginning the testing of
paints and the creation of my art piece. Next entry will be about my
visit to the Crocker and the information I will find there.
August 28, 2017 Yesterday I went to the Crocker Art museum. I saw
many paintings that had the type of paint style that I want. I found that
most of those paintings are in fact oil on canvas, I took pictures in order
to show the texture I am looking for. I also found some artists that use
this method in most of their work. Wayne Theibaud is one of them. I saw
his Boston Cremes painting on display in the museum. Next I'm going to
focus on beginning my project and continuing on the research part of
how exactly this style is implemented.

September 25, 2017. Well I looked into it and found that I
need to get a special brush that has a ton of bristles but isn’t
very big. I also need to get oil based paints and another
canvas. I didn’t really look into whether the type of canvas
matters but I figure it probably does. My plan is to get the oil
based paints and try again this weekend. I really need to get
set up with a center so I think I may use my friends artist loft
to paint so the leaves don't get on it this time. I have asked them
and they said it was fine. I'm also going with them to second
Saturday to see if any artists there can help me. I’m probably
going to go to that in November.

So today I started experimenting with all the different paints, paint brushes, etc.
1:15 I got out all my supplies and started setting up
1:30 finally got everything up and running (setting up easels is hard work)
2:00 got distracted and tried to paint the backyard ( does not look good)
3:30ish went backout to see if paint had dried
3:31 paint had not dried
4:00 went back out and paint had finally dried enough for a second coat
4:45ish layering and making ridges is hard I could not figure out how to make them stay
5:00 gave up and went back to research on how to make those layers stay
9:50 went to sleep thinking about watching paint dry

Since I had dance all day yesterday I had to do my painting today. I got new canvases
and paint although a little less than last time to conserve money.
12:30 got back from church
1:00 finished setting up easel under a tarp this time
1:30 halfway done with the first coat of paint which is very thin this time to have more
time to dry.
1:57 done with that and now letting it dry
2:39 aha its dry much fatser
3:00 using new brush to create peaks and valleys in the piece
3:30 its looking good but I hope hills stay once I leave it to dry
4:00 done and now to see if it worked
5:00 came back the piece is dry except for the ridges and thick paint spots which have
started to fall a little bit
5:40 brough piece inside and layed it down to see if that helps
6:00 did not help at all and now most ridges have become flat
6:15 gave up and had dinner
7:00 decided to try again on another day

EXCERPT 10
August 10, 2017 School has just started and after talking with my peers I have
realized that I am very behind. Most people have begun the taking action part
of their project while I am still researching. I had to talk to many of my peers in
order to figure out what was going on. Since I had not been able to log in to
ManageBac I did not realize there were checkpoints that should be reached
or how soon the project had to be done. I've also realized that I can't find my
papers that I had written my other two entries on so I have started a new
sheet. I am planning on visiting the Crocker Art Museum sometime soon in
order to see what styles are used when creating a 3D painting. I also need to
meet with Ms. Char to ask questions and have the checkpoint completed.

September 14, 2017. Today while I was painting it was more difficult than I
expected. The paint took way longer to dry than I thought and the layering
did not work at all. Also, when the easel was sitting out for so long leaves got
stuck to it. The impressionistic pattern was very clear but that is not what
was important. I need to figure out how I am going to get the paint to stay
layered even after it has dried.

October 1, 2017. When I tried to paint the art pieces the ridges kept falling. I'm
still unsure how to fix this but I will keep trying. The easel was properly
positioned this time and it did not get stuff on it. The paint dried quicker because
I did not use oil paint instead I used acrylic but it still didn't stay. I might need to
change the utensil I use because a brush doesn’t seem to work. I just need to keep
trying.

January 2, 2017. Well today definitely did not go like I expected it to. I arrived at their
house a little before 1:00pm and couldn't start painting until around three. It then took
me several hours to finish. The sky was easy to complete and so was the ocean but the
rock was so difficult since i had to mix the color for it but when i tried to do detailing
I didn't like it so i tried to paint over it but it was a different color brown so I had to
redo the whole thing. Then I added color but it never looked right or fit the style I was
going for so then I thought why not just go completely crazy and do all kinds of
splotches of color all over the thing. Then Steven who is my art friend told me to do
that to the ocean and hes a professional artist so I said okay but then it ruined the whole
thing. So all in all it started out good but then was a mess. We also started to run out of
paint. But I finished the work and I think i could and have done better but this is what I
could do given my environment when doing it.
